Dear Soon-to-be-Umbrella Member,
Since day one, the mission of our organization has been to make it as easy as possible for people 65+ to live in the homes they love. We have done that by creating an affordable network of community members - our Umbrella Neighbors - to help you with the small things around the house that you can’t do, don’t know how to do or simply don’t want to do.
As you may know, Umbrella’s services are provided by vetted community members – teachers, retired firefighters, stay at home parents, and others – who give back and share their skills as affordably as possible. While they are not working through Umbrella to maximize their income, the feedback has been clear that all too many Neighbors are actually losing money on jobs when gas, travel time, and the wear and tear on their tools are considered. We need to make a change.
The average handyperson on Long Island makes around $100/hour. We have decided to raise the hourly rate for Umbrella Neighbors from $16 to $20 an hour. By doing so, we will be able to recruit and retain more skilled workers, continue to provide very affordable services, and ultimately serve you better. The new price will go into effect March 15th, 2019 (2 months from now). Until then the price will remain at $16 per hour.
Make no mistake. The decision to raise the rate of Neighbor services was difficult. But it is necessary. In the end, we feel confident that Members will continue to get enormous value from Umbrella while also doing a bit more to make sure we are doing right by the Umbrella Neighbors.
We’re also hard at work expanding Umbrella membership benefits, including:
Fast and easy booking of vetted professionals, like this year’s popular snow removal program. We’ll be extending this to licensed plumbers and electricians, for the larger jobs you need.
Access to free advice on navigating big topics, as well as community forums for other questions we often get asked.
Is there more we can do for you? We are always eager for your feedback. Don’t hesitate to call or text us at (516) 882-4498 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Below are some answers to common questions
Why are we raising the hourly rate?
We will be able to attract more skilled men and women as Umbrella Neighbors, who pay for their own transportation and bring their own tools.
Who gets paid what?
Neighbors get paid $16, and Umbrella keeps $4 from each hour. We use this $4 to help pay for our staff to book jobs, answer questions, cover credit card processing and to provide you with our Happiness Guarantee.
Will prices go up again?
We anticipate this to be the only rate increase for some time.
